LIFE MEMBER RAD, MISTD, DIP AES
Gillian trained in London at the Rambert School of Dance and Arts Educational School, London.
A professional ballet dancer for ten years appearing with leading ballet companies - English National Ballet, Graz Opera Ballet, Austria, and latterly with the Australian based Ballet Go Round.
In 1983 Gillian retired from dancing and began teaching on the Island as well as guest teaching in England and abroad.
The school has flourished winning many mainland festival awards and winning the prestigious "All England Dance" Festival group twice in London.
Many ex-pupils are currently dancing in leading ballet companies, musical theatre companies and cruise ships worldwide.
In 2010 Gillian was privileged to be made a Life Member of the Royal Academy of Dance - with certification celebrating this great achievement.
In 2013 The Royal Academy of Dance appointed Gillian as a mentor to help and train young student teachers.

Joel Morris was born on the Isle of Wight where he received his early training with Gillian Cartwright. Later training includes The Royal Ballet school, The Central School of Ballet and The Royal Danish Ballet (Summer intensive on full scholarship). He has had a performing career of 19 years and in this time he had performed with London City Ballet, ENB, Atlanta Ballet, The South African Ballet Theatre, and Cape Town City Ballet. He was also a company member of KBallet in Japan for its first seasons.
Joel danced in CATS in the West End (London Palladium) and on Tour where he was lucky enough to perform the iconic role of Mr Mistofelees and attending rehearsals with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Dame Gillian Lynne.
Classical principal roles include, Franz (Coppélia) Blue Bird and Carabosse (The Sleeping Beauty) Don Jose (Carmen) The Nutcracker Prince, Gamache (Don Quixote) and Jesters in Swan Lake and Cinderella. He has also performed Balanchine Who Cares? and Ashton’s Les Patineurs.
Joel teaches at The Royal Ballet School, The RAD Dance School, Pineapple Dance Studios, Bodywork Cambridge, and The Ballet School Notting Hill to name a few and teaches all over the world at different summer programs and seminars.
Professional companies Joel has taught include the West End cast of An American in Paris Vienna festival ballet, The South African Ballet Theatre, and New York’s Les Ballets Grandiva

Donna started her training on the Isle of Wight at the Gillian Cartwright School of Dance where she studied Ballet, Tap and Modern. During her time here Donna competed in the All England Dance Festivals. She was also given opportunities to dance with Ballet Russe and Wayne Sleep. During her final two years Donna was also accepted as a Senior Associate at the Central School of Ballet, London.
At the age of 16 she received a Dance and Drama award to attend Tring Park, Hertfordshire, where she gained A-level Dance, BTEC Diploma in Performing Arts and Certificate in Professional Ballet. During her time at Tring Park she performed at Wycombe Swan Theatre, High Wycombe, and Bloomsbury Theatre, London.
In 2008 Donna started at Chichester University, studying for BA (HONS) Dance where she started teaching Ballet for the University's Dance Society and was also asked to join Vortex Contemporary Company and 3-Fall Dance company. During the summer holidays she also performed in shows and cabarets at various holiday parks and hotels.
After graduating in 2011 Donna accepted work as an entertainer and dance captain, which included choreographing, teaching, costuming and dancing in 8 shows a week and performing as Cinderella in the in-house pantomime.
In 2012 Donna started teaching with Gillian Cartwright whilst also taking her teachers exams. She completed her exams successfully in 2014 and is now a fully qualified RAD and BBO teacher.
Street Dance teacher
Joe graduated from Stella Mann College of Performing Arts in 2013. Upon graduating he worked extensively at numerous corporate events at some of London’s most prestigious venues, including The Dorchester Hotel and Cafe de Paris, working under the direction of international choreographers including Ryan Jenkins and Hamilton Evans. Since then he has worked on Celebrity, Fred Olsen and P&O Australia cruise lines as Dance Captain and Company Performance Manager. Joe has been based back home on the Isle of Wight since 2016 and works professionally for Spotlight IOW as a performer, dance tutor and choreographer as well as appearing in their summer seasons and pantomimes at Shanklin Theatre. Joe joined the faculty at Gillian Cartwright School of Dance in 2017 as our commercial teacher and has created competition dance pieces as well as numbers for our shows.
Roberta trained with the Gillian Cartwright School of Dance on the Isle of Wight, was a Senior Associate of the Royal Ballet School and finalist for Young Dancer of the Year in 1999. She went on to train professionally at the English National Ballet School London before continuing her study at the Royal Academy of Dance where she graduated in 2005 with a 1st class degree in the Art and Teaching of Ballet from Durham University.
Roberta is now a freelance ballet teacher at the Gillian Cartwright School of Dance and Karen Blackburn Dance Academy, as well as the Assistant Director, Administrator and associate teacher for Ballet Boost. Roberta is an appointed RAD Examiner and distance learning tutor on the RAD CBTS and DDTS programmes for trainee teachers and also conducts courses on behalf of the RAD CPD and training departments throughout the UK and abroad. She has previously tutored on the RAD BABE, PDTC, PDPTC and LRAD courses as well as freelance teaching for Susan Robinson School of Ballet, West London School of Dance, The Ballet School Notting Hill, Arts Educational School and Urdang Academy in London – among other schools.
